"It's impossible to predict how things will roll out over time,"

True, true.

(That's one of the things that gets me worked up, when all these Talking Heads act like Armageddon is practically INEVITABLE if we change anything *at all*. My answer to them is 'how do you know it's not 'inevitable' if we never change anything? ;-)

"... but your scenario makes as much sense as some of the more dire predictions."

Thanks. I think it's got pretty good odds. (And certainly, practically everyone over there right now is trying to 'work' Uncle Sammy for their *own benefit*. <g>)

No way in Hell do I see where standing in the middle of the historic Sunni/Shia feud, or standing between Persian and Arab power ambitions, alternately taking fire from all sides, is likely to pay off any better then NOT doing that....

"Either way, I don't see why we're there at this point. Our stated mission was accomplished long ago."

Agreed, big time.

"And whether we withdraw today or in ten years, the aftermath is likely to be the same: a bloody civil war."

That, too I agree with. (Only THEN after ten more years, we likely will have burned up an additional trillion and a half or so, of *borrowed* money, new debt, at God only knows what damage to our economy and our future... and God only knows at what cost in our blood.)

Whereas, if we pull out, and the various sides reach a political agreement that would be all well and good... and if they choose to fight each other for years and years to come... that wouldn't be nearly so bad for AMERICAN INTERESTS, either.
