Yes, I've been getting them for at least 4 years, usually associated with PGH and a few other 'Roys.

I made an honest effort several years ago to track down the proper tax handling of these ugly beasts. I studied the tax code intensely, made several calls to the IRS and got irreproducible answers, visited the IRS office and demanded an interview with somebody knowledgeable about such things, asked tax-savvy friends, and snooped around TurbidTax. None of these avenues yielded clear answers. I even asked Schwab after noticing that their 1099 handling of these issues was uneven and subject to multiple revisions.

I finally concluded that nobody with an IQ under 180 was capable of understanding this accounting chaos. I certainly don't. And I deeply resent them imposing the necessity of hiring a tax preparation expert to explain to me how much money I owe.

If they come after me, I'll plead ignorance (God d*mmit Captain, I'm a geologist, not a bookkeeper!), with no attempt at deception, and probably pay a fine with interest. In any case, one of them will have to elucidate the method of their madness.

In case you haven't guessed, I'm probably way too small of a fish for them to recoup their investigatory expenditures.
