OT - Taxes

Regarding the competency of the IRS, in 2006 I filed and paid a large balance due on April 17th, the last day. I sent the check in via certified mail. I was hit with a penalty for not filing by Apr. 15, and in addition the IRS said my return was not received until April 28th. They had no record of certified receipt, return requested.

Of course in large type on the 1040 it stated Federal tax returns were due April 17th because of holidays, but nobody at IRS thought to amend the automated billing program. Took me 2 months to straighten this out - no apology from IRS.

How can talk about taxes on oil and gas investments be off topic ?

Paris Hilton, for example, is off topic.

Great rant, Chancels. It's a pleasure to read one like that every so often. I especially liked this one:

"I stopped worrying about the wash sale rule long ago. My Schedule D is about 30 pages. There is no way anybody is going to comb through that stuff."

The wash sale rule and the 'short against the box' regulations aren't even on my radar screen anymore. I can't abide that waste of time since, imo, it all evens out eventually and the tax gets paid anyway.

Hell if even I can't keep track of what I'm doing how is some numbnut from the IRS gonna scope it out??
