Must be a costly operation just to stick them in a vault, where they already have tons of the things.

They must feel the operation is cheaper then just leaving them on the sea floor. Leaving them on the sea floor is cheap unless some one else would clean them up. It's all very odd.

Not only that but man made diamonds come as big as you like and flawless.

During the past year, scientists have mastered the ability to grow 10-carat single crystals with a color and clarity that surpass mined diamonds. Within a decade, they’ll also be cheaper. Expect to see the first diamond semiconductors hit the market in 2011.
