Looks like the argumentation of the Germans at Siemens. They used to bring a kid fresh from the university to work in projects. It was ridiculous. I help many of them and saw many others failing.

I'm in the IT field and I am familiar with warm bodies not performing..however my company has had several students who were very good at what they did, you need to be able to separate the wheat from the chaff and fire the ones who can't perform (or hire them on a trial basis and cut as needed) As I understand German labor laws are more restrictive than US laws. FWIW I've encountered some H1-B guys who absolutely brilliant.. and some who were book smart but had difficulties with practical application. Cuts both ways.

But with that said... journalism is a much different (and much more competitive field in the US..) than IT. Have the student show you some writing from the past year. If they don't work out within the month. Cut them. I mean let's look at what high journalism standards we are shooting for:

"But he said it can be done from afar now that weekly Pasadena City Council meetings can be watched over the Internet."

I mean weekly coverage of City Council meetings and sewer contracts.. ? How hard can that be..? Top level journalism students should have about 3 to 4 years of experience already by the time they reach the end of their sophomore year in college. (Jr. High, High School, and College newspapers..) If they don't get experience covering such challenging and griping tasks such as local sewer contracts.. where do they start...?
