Is this really analogous? Were these immigrant groups in this country illegally? Were American cities getting inundated with people living ten to a one bedroom? Legal immigrants lived in slums during the turn of the century but most were paying taxes and not sending most of their income back to their country of origin. And don't forget that illegals are violating American law to be here.

Well, there was no such thing as an "illegal" immigrant then. We let them come here.

And we continue to let people legally come into the country....illegals are 'in addition to' those people.

I think its too easy to call it racism when people oppose illegal immigration. It ignores the very real problems created when illegals move to southern and western cities.

Whatever problems the illegals cause are going on because the immigrants are living in squalor. If we were to try to integrate them better rather than forcing them to hide and live in ghettos, I think the situation would be a lot better. Maybe I'm naive, but... I'd rather see people treated like people, American or not.

I really don't think you understand the nature of the problem. Illegals live in ghetto-like conditions because they want to save money so they can send as much back to Mexico et al as possible. There is a select group of landlords in LA, both Anglo and Latino, that rent to illegals. They charge a high rate because they know their building will get destroyed. You rent a one bedroom to one illegal, you will have ten living there within six months. That's how they save money.......they sleep in shifts. What's most infuriating is that the Mexican gov't incourages the illegal trade because their income helps balance Mexico's books and keeps their peasants from talking revolution. With Mexico's oil money and mineral wealth, it shouldn't need these funds but then Mexico is as corrupt a gov't as they come.

Finally, any urban planning 101 course will tell you that the worst thing for the stability of a city and its neighborhoods is a lot of renters who have no committment to the city. And that describes illegals.........these are men...off on their own.......who get drunk most weekends, pee all over the streets, throw garbage out their windows and shoot guns into the air on most holidays and on days where Mexico wins at soccer. They and whatever offspring they produce overwhelm the public facilities in their area of the city.

>And frankly, if objecting to people who pee on city streets, shoot guns into the air and could care less what happens to their neighborhood is racism, then I am guilty as charged.

But crime isn't particularly bad among illegal immigrants, because they have to lie low to avoid deportation.

Z, illegals rarely get deported in LA. They live openly just like you or I. The only time they get deported is when they are caught committing a crime but that doesn't stop them from committing crimes. I understand that 30% of illegals commit some form of crime while living in the US. And even when they do get deported, in years past, they would just come back across. The INS has been incredibly lax......esp. in big cities like LA. Prior to the last couple of years, illegals went back and forth across the border like most American citizens do.

I just don't think that relaxing immigration laws will make that many more people come here than already do. It's not like it's that hard to get here right now.

Again, you have no idea what you are saying. Not only are the illegals hurting our cities but where they predominate they create a false economy of cheap labor. That is why some Republicans are pushing for lighter laws. Their constituents like the cheap labor.

Z, I would really get some more input on this subject..........you sound like the liberal commercials that defend illegals. In those commercials, the illegals sound so innocent and helpless. However, I have lived the reality.

"But crime isn't particularly bad among illegal immigrants, because they have to lie low to avoid deportation."

If you believe this ,you're living in a fantasy land, not America. Not that illegals commit a lot of crimes, they don't commit any more than anyone else, other than the crime of just being here.

Try this - look up INS in your phone book, give 'em a call and try to get them to pick up some illegals. If there even IS a number for INS in your community (very doubtful), they won't do it. The local police won't do it. The state police won't do it. The local police who arrest criminal illegals don't do anything to get them deported either, even so much as calling INS.

Also, Hispanic gangs now span several countries, all American states, all American and Mexican prisons and are getting more organized and professional all the time.

So, think again.

This comes DIRECTLY from some of my experiences in S. California, where I lived in a barrio full of illegals.
