Yeah, which is causing a lot of injuries in their careers. It is no accident that the horses that won the Derby and the Preakness were the two horses (among the elite) with the fewest races this year. Nearly every elite horse is retired after his fourth year and many after their 3rd year. Part of that is the fact that syndication fees are higher than purses and the other part is that they are being bred and fed for very short careers.

We may see another Affirmed or Seattle Slew, but we'll never see another John Henry. John Henry won The Eclipse Award as Horse of the Year when he was 9. He was a real trooper and one mean horse. At the unlikely age of 32, he will still kick or bite his handlers when he's in a bad mood, which is frequently.
