slacks - when you arrive in Beijing you get off the plane and into the walkway leading to immigration...there in that walkway is a small stand selling GSM SIM cards. After customs and into the arrivals area there are more stores selling GSM SIM cards.

In the underground stations there are vendors of GSM SIM cards and refill cards. So are there on many of the streets. I did once try to find a cdma store and I did. In the front of the store were Nokia GSM phones and in the very back of the store were the cdma phones. Not much of a display.

There is a huge choice of GSM handsets in China (and in Mexico) but not much choice in cdma handsets.

CDMA in China is a half hearted effort. Actaully look at the choice of handsets for GSM in the US compared with CDMA choice. More GSM to chose from.

But in hte US people are more used to being regimented than in China or Europe. They are used to being a number, and mostly all having basically the same handsets etc.

Anyway the Chinese in the end only want convenience and use phones to talk to eachother and GSM gives them exactly waht they want. This is a repeat of the Betamax story and we all fell for the emperors clothes.

Actaully it is in even greater contrast in China where you would think that the advantages or so called advantages of cdma would have appealed to the WSPs who could have made more money due to the much touted efficiencies of cdma over GSM but even that hasn't persuaded the Chinese mangements who are so tough on pricing everywhere in the Chinese economy but seemingly haven't bothered to save all those costs by deploying cdma on a larger scale...funny that.

We've been had.

Maybe w-cdma or cdma 2000 will take off in China...but first they've got to be licensed ....when they do eventually maybe Q will get some roylties from the sales....maybe.

best,

L
