11:13 Floor Talk: China stocks

We're seeing some unusual movement in several China stocks today, most notably in SINA +5.8%, FMCN +3.9%, BIDU +3.5%, CTRP +2.9%, NTES +2.9%. The common denominator among these stocks are that they are generally internet-related (FMCN is ad-related, a tie-in to AQNT). Yet the China ETFs and industrial China stocks aren't showing much movement: i.e. LFC +1.1%, CYD +0.7%, FXI +0.2%, CHL -0.3%, CHU -0.9%, etc... The obvious China-related catalyst today is that the Chinese Vice Premier has arrived in the US today for economic talks with US Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson. In addition, separately there were some US-China deals on the company level announced: ERTS took a stake in NCTY, and China announced a $3 bln investment in Blackstone... While the trade talks can often hold out the possibility of some long-term macroeconomic implications for Chinese stocks, and the cross-border deals may ignite some M&A speculation, it's likely that the momentum in the internet-related names mentioned above is just that -- momentum. For example, BIDU, SINA, FMCN, and CTRP were all showing relative strength in the last couple of sessions, and/or were hovering near easily identified breakout levels. The Chinese stock market itself has recently been rocketing higher (prompting many commentators to call it another "bubble"), so it's likely that US momentum traders are just pushing the most recent momentum names higher as far as they can while the fun lasts.

11:57 AMSC Am Superconductor -- breaking out to 3-year highs following NYC power grid announcement (16.57 +1.57) -Update-

AMSC is breaking out to fresh 3-year highs this morning following the co's announcement that it has teamed with Consolidated Edison of New York (ED) and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to develop and deploy a new high temperature superconductor (HTS) power grid technology in New York City. The Department of Homeland Security is expected to invest up to $25 mln in the development of this technology to enable "Secure Super Grids" in the U.S. Secure Super Grids utilize customized HTS wires, HTS power cables and ancillary controls to deliver more power through the grid while also being able to suppress power surges that can disrupt service. This project has been code named "Project Hydra" by D.H.S., and AMSC is the prime contractor. The co signed a letter contract worth $1.7 mln with D.H.S. on May 18, 2007... Although today's announced Secure Super Grid system is not expected to be commissioned until early 2010, this announcement is having a significant impact on AMSC shares, which are trading up 10.5% after taking out the stock's 3-year range high of $16.24. AMSC was a high-flyer back in the bubble days of 2000, trading as high as $75. However, the stock took a hit with the rest of the tech sector post-2000, trading as low as ~$2.00 in 2002. The stock climbed higher in 2003, and has been trading in the ~$6.75-15.25 range for the past three years... For a little background on AMSC, we note the co develops products (such as the HTS wires/cables mentioned above) to improve the cost, efficiency and reliability of systems that generate, deliver and use electric power. We note that AMSC is unprofitable, and while today's announcement is not likely to have a material impact on near-term estimates (2008 revs are currently estimated at $260 mln), it appears to be incrementally positive and enough of a catalyst to push the stock through resistance. The next major resistance level is the Jan04 high of $19.95 (representing 6-year highs). ... AMSC earnings are set for 5/24, before the open... Mkt cap: $578 mln; float: 34.1 mln; average daily volume: 358K shares.
