I share all of those sentiments. There is a vast difference, however, between suffering because we are tortured by what we witness going on in the world and attempting to define a US policy of Interrogative Torture. I think we can do the latter, if only to define an 'out of bounds' region of interrogation. The alternative, which I don't believe is doable at this point, is to define a policy of US Interrogative Torture that could be applied by our noble military personnel, without compromising their honor.
