If you can't guarantee these results would you agree to prohibitions against torture?

Who can ever guarantee that a detainee is going to truthfully confess their activities? No one knows what ultimately causes a detainee to "break". Sometimes it's just saying the right thing that triggers a cascade of remorse.

As an example, I heard about this one detainee who was suspected of having been involved in a conspiracy to bomb a voting center during the last Iraqi election. These centers were normally located in schools, much as they are in the US.

When asked about his children and where they attended school, he displayed considerable pride and love for his children. But when the interrogator then mentioned to him that the voting center he was attempting to bomb was a school full of children just like his, he broke down into tears. He'd recognized that even though he was targeting a different school than the ones his children were attending, it struck home that some other terrorist might have been targeting his children's school.

He spilled his guts with no one having to lift a finger.

But not all of the detainees we have are so sentimental.. especially the foreigners who believe their families are safe from harm.
