Gus > my opinion being that the only, real deterrent to widening the mess to Iran lies half a world away: it's China!

That's why I said, rather unkindly it's true but it was intended to be amusing, that you dropped a fart. China has nothing to do with Iran per se so to introduce it in a discussion about Iran is a red herring. Indeed, more than that because the discussion now turns on US relations with China -- and that's why there was no more discussion.

> Crimson simplistically believes that "the only deterrent to war" so far is Iran's ability to wage severe reprisals on her would-be aggressors

Whatever the reason, Iran's deterrence has been effective because, despite Israel's ranting and raving for the US to go to war, the US has declined -- thereby allowing Iran's defences to get even stronger -- and its nuclear enrichment program to continue.

> Crimson's rationale is but the poor rehash of peacenik propaganda before the second Iraq war.

Then why didn't you challenge his assertion on that, why introduce the matter of China?

> Iran is quite another kettle of fish --it's four times as big as Iraq, Iranians are united behind their leadership. The Iranian military's got topnotch missiles. Then there's Iran far-reaching tentacles that could strike back anywhere, anytime!! Hezbollah in Lebanon, Hamas in Gaza, Moqtada al Sadr in Iraq!! Not to mention the Revolutionary Guard --oh no, you don't want to fight the invincible Revolutionary Guard, Iran's elite stormtroopers.

That's also what I believe and, if you don't, then refute the argument on the facts.

> See the pattern?

Frankly, no. Iraq was/is a completely different story. There is no comparison between Iraq and Iran. And what's more, and considering the expression "one can't step into the same river twice", the US is also a completely different story. In 2002-3 the US was ready to take on anyone, the neocons were rampant, Bush's prestige and rating were in the clouds. Now, the US' tail is very much between its legs, the neocons are discredited, Bush is effectively a lame-duck and the US is looking for any face-saving excuse to leave Iraq. War talk about Iran is just bluster -- the US has lost its credibility.
