Oh,oh.....an emotional undercut to the stomach.....if it wasn't for immigration, none of us would exist.

No, it's not about emotions... it's just that we allowed immigration for a long time, to the chagrin of many, and everything turned out OK.

The chagrin of many? I don't think that was the case. Back at the turn of the century when immigration was at its peak, the US was considered a huge country that needed to be filled. It was growing very quickly like the Chinas and the Brazils of the 21st century, requiring an evergrowing labor force. We are not the same country now as then. In your drives through America you saw a lot of open space but I bet you saw little flat land that had not been developed in some way......whether with housing, or for agriculture or with tree farms or some kind of mining. Every square inch of land has been surveyed and accounted for........that is not a situation calling for more development. In fact, I think GW is the initial stage of an earth starting to suffer from over population. If so, America doesn't need more people, it needs less. Unfortunately, given America's bent for growth, that will not happen in our lifetimes.

But that's not the intent of many illegals in this country. They have family back in Mexico and Central America. They intend to go back. America is a temporary waystop. Its a critical difference that plays out in many ways differently than when your ancestors emigrated to the US.

You don't think they'd stay if we'd let them?

Some would, some won't......you assume they prefer the lifestyle here. I am not so sure. But that's only an issue if your suggestion of opening our borders to everyone was to happen.
