As for "nearly double"

162,000 to 200,000 is nearly double? Even the 130 or so thousand before the "surge" to 200,000 isn't nearly doubling.

The whole complaint about escalation is silly. I might disagree with calls for immediate withdrawal, but at least the ideas isn't intrinsically senseless. But if you are going to fight the war you fight the war. If there is a need for additional soldiers, and you have them, you send them. As long as you continue to fight the war escalation is normally a good thing, unless your talking about something like "escalation to nuclear weapons", or your talking about escalation of force to levels beyond what is useful (for example to levels beyond what your logistics system can support).
