Republicans said that after weeks of struggle, they had forced Democrats to give up their demand for a date to withdraw the troops.

And the republicans think this is a good thing? If this doesn't come back to bite them in the butt I will be very surprised. The war is now all theirs - the republicans - for the next election. I doubt the democrats did this on purpose, but might be a great accidental strategy for a win in a year plus.
