Got a lot of selling left to convince me. You can start with traffic jams and massive ad lighting if you want.

The chagrin of many? I don't think that was the case.

It was the case. It was when America was at its most xenophobic.

You spoke of many......at that time, the perception of many was that we needed to fill up the country......we had too many open spaces. Sure there was xenophobia....that's a condition that exists almost everywhere on this planet, not just the US. Its a part of the human condition.

In fact, I think GW is the initial stage of an earth starting to suffer from over population. If so, America doesn't need more people, it needs less.

The earth needs fewer people... having more people in cities is actually better for the earth. The "greenest" place in the country? NYC. Why? Because people use less space, so they use less electricity, more public transportations, less water...

You and I have a different interpretation of green. NYC somewhat efficiently packs many people into a small area but I hardly call that being green nor is it ecologically and human friendly. The City smells.....its noisy.....its congested......the streets, the sidewalks, the subways. Paris or London do a much better job of maintaining a high density while providing cities that are reasonably liveable and somewhat green.
