My (underlying) point is that I believe a certain percentage of the pro-torture bloc is actually more attracted to the punitive side of torture. It is indeed a very satisfying image to think of bin Laden experiencing some of the pain he has inflicted on others.

So, why not extend it to criminals? Pedophiles would be at the top of the list, along with child murderers and, maybe, all murderers. Drug runners, organized crime, pushers, ...

But, if we cross that line, it will be very difficult to cross back. If it is not already too late...

But, back to your point. A line between torture and non-torture? Yes, I believe there is. I would like that line to be this:

I'm stopped late at night by the police, ostensibly because of a broken tail light, but really because my description (long hair, scruffy beard, 20ish, driving a hot rod) matches one for a crime committed earlier in another part of town. Police suspect me of some crime, but need more information. (this actually happened to me; they held me at my car for an hour before they got word that the real perp had been caught).

The line is how I'd expect to be treated, what is fair and reasonable, and still allows for the public safety. Cause it CAN happen to you...
