One other difference. In the 17th century, Christian elites actively discouraged their minions from reading the Christian scriptures. I wonder why.

It is the duty of Muslims to not only read but memorize vast swaths of their holy writings.

The difference is that whereas this offensive policy by (so called ) Christian monarchs could be supported only by twisting Christian Scripture beyond recognition, similar Muslim policy is written in clear understandable Arabic in their scriptures.

No, it is and was basic to Christian theology that there is only "one way" to heaven. So letting heretics run around free and infect others is damnable - literally - if you believe that. Once it's understood that immortal souls are at stake, other things will follow, like the Spanish Inquisition.
