We had some acquaintances from France (on holiday) over last night. She had her second baby a year ago and had to have a C section, thus in the hospital for a week (no US insurance company would stand for THAT!). When she checked out, her bill was $Zero; no paperwork, just "have a nice day". Her husband gets 20% off work, paid, to help care for the child. They also get 400 Euros a month because they have 2 children (not sure how long this lasts).

On the other hand they find it very hard to save money because their taxes are so high. Both have good jobs.

Pick your poison, or something in between. If you are one of the 25% who are uninsured, or the 50% of bankruptcies that are caused by a medical emergency, I'm sure you would pick the French system. If you are one of the ~70% that has (outrageously expensive and actually a "tax" on earnings) employer paid health insurance you probably pick our system.
