Part of the reason the Vietnam mess got so out of hand was that many of the State Dept's best Asia hands were drummed out during the McCarthy era, since they knew so much about China and southeast Asia from their postwar experience.

:-) "because they would not support Israeli interpretations of ME events." I agree, but imo that is the same thing as being divorced from reality, and screening for stupidity. The idea that we need to support Israel's interpretations of things is a subset (or outgrowth) of the problems I mention. The only interpretations of ME events that should matter to us are the interpretations that lead to correct assessments, and the very best policy choices for the US.
