Unfortunately that is the dichotomy that has developed. Since ideology X is at variance with science, science must be wrong, or scientists are amoral liars. Hence a great doubt of scientific methods has developed in the USA. However, the main thing that individuals don't understand is what mountains of evidence mean. The fact that we now have 40+ dating methods that all agree and all indicate an old earth makes no difference to these people. They still think they are arguing against a single carbon dating method, and since all methods produce occasional anomalies, there is no reason to trust such nonsense.
