I keep trying to imagine the Republican nominee saying we have to stay the course in Iraq no matter what, with US deaths nearing 5000 by then and some soldiers going back for fourth tours, and it's hard for me to imagine the swing voters in Ohio, PA, VA and the like saying yeah, we better give the firm-handed Republicans the benefit of the doubt when it comes to security threats and our response.

It's no accident that 72% of voters now think we are going the wrong direction. Unless the eventual Republican nominee changes his tune and becomes a change advocate, they are tethering themselves to a giant lead ball.
