I like to think about what it must be like to be one of my cats, but I believe it will be a long time until we find out.

I don't think we will find out, because such understanding is not based on reason, but experiencing. We can't experience being a cat. I'm willing to allow that perhaps in the far distant future, some sort of electronic stimulation performing a transspecies experience might be doable. Not currently on the horizon though.
