BTW for anyone who is curious, and you should be if you are intellectually healthy, would have wondered at our newfie's skill in the last post, but I feel he was being rather miserly in his estimation of contained BF.

If you take a good size coastal Pseudotsuga menzeisii and you have a breast diam of 4 feet, a useful top diameter of 1 feet, and total height of 120 feet, its normal contained BF would be closer to 11,000, (13 tons) not a mere 642 or whatever. DF are biggie wood. Pecker poles and firewood might be a few hundred BF, but not a coastal fir, if it begged to be cut down.

Trees found in old-growth forests average between 120-180 cm in diameter and 60-80 meters in height. However, old-growth trees between 240-300 cm in diameter and up to 108 m in height may be found. Douglas-fir commonly lives as long as 700 years, but maximum ages of 1350 years have been recorded (Hardin et al. 2001).
