Presumably they know that the nickel is mostly copper (65% I think...). Still, I could see that combination of copper and nickel being worth 9 cents considering that a copper penny is worth more than a cent by a good margin. Still... not worth picking them up off the street, esp. if a steamroller is coming towards you.
