Just to add a bit to my last post, I think that this quote from Clark sums up the situation rather well.

But regardless no one should expect a clean sweep - the chance that a reasonably competent, if litigious, company like Broadcom has no patents upon which Qualcomm infringes has to be near zero. This is going to be about relatively value.

The reason that Q is in this difficult position is that they lost the video compression patents case to Broadcom and they dropped their GSM/GPRS/EDGE cases (presumably for strategic reasons with respect to Nokia).

With regards to the GSM/GPRS/EDGE patents, I think Q figured they could keep it in their back pocket in the event that Nokia caused problems about an extension.

Nokia has not only allegedly infringed GSM/GPRS/EDGE patents they also violated the terms of their licensing agreement with Qualcomm. Nokia was prohibited from using the patents in any device that was not 3G. This is why Qualcomm has sued. Nokia of course, has spun this several ways. First, they didn't infringe, followed by we didn't infringe because the patents were covered in their licensing deal with Qualcomm. Nokia has never mailed Qualcomm a check for the latter spin! Perhaps this situation is what prompted Nokia's CFO to spout out his we won't pay more line , we expect to pay less!
