CCD..Colony Collapse Disorder..bee hives literally dying off/collapsing without an obvious reason..the commercial bee keepers who schlep bees all over the country to pollinize(sp) crops have been hit..it's made a lot of headlines here in CA..I had no idea how essential bees are to keep us fed..I only know about it cuz of the gardening websites I lurk..

There's various speculations about it's causes: suburban sprawl displacing habitats, pesticides, even cell phone waves..the wiki has it summarized..I also saw a PBS type program..very eerie to see these beehives become essentially 'ghost towns'..the bees leave for the day and never come back..

What were your other settings on the camera?..1/500 shoulda been enuff?..I made a huge error on the D200 when I visited SCal recently..I can't even remember the settings off the top of my head..but I found that the shutter speed was way too short so that the shutter barely opened..all these birthday party shots were just like you described..too dark and software couldn't fix them..ah, I had it on fixed aperture so the camera had no choice but to give a too short speed..

All my best shots are lucky

Every famous photog includes luck when asked..back in analogue days, a very talented guy told me that if he gets one shot for every roll of 36, he feels the shoot was a success..remember, people only post their best ones..
