For a really good laugh go rent the video Dr Kellogg, about the guy who brought us cornflakes. It is produced (IIRC) by an outfit called Dirty Hands Production, and indeed it is a little on the Adult side of R rated movies IMO. It gives you an excellent, but possibly a little exaggerated, look at what pasted for medical science in the late 1800's.

Science took a wrong turn with Eugenics. It is notable how many non scientists make that list you quote.

Anyway science (and it was scientific method that withstood the test) corrected itself and the fashionable theory of the day fell by the wayside where most scientific theories go.

The Nazies helped Eugenics die more then anybody.

It's only dumbchits Crichton who keep bringing it up.
