An American friend of mine made a fortune (between $100-200MM USD) playing the HK horses between 1990 and 1998. Made many people around him rich as well.

Same idea - taxicab drivers bet on fortune teller's opinion, number 8, etc. Even with a 17% track take (win bets, exotics higher) he used publicly available data, made models, backtested and arbed the crap out of racing. Eventually some Aussie syndicates showed up too. Couldn't do it over here as track pools are tiny.

So yes, i think the smart hedgies are in China and doing very well indeed.

The 8 thing is partly true -- I know some Chinese who chose houses in a new subdivision solely on the basis that their address would be #18 or #28 Suchandsuch Street.

It's not any different than the western affinity for lucky number 7, i.e. what's so magic about that number?
