....."blow out the techs for the summer and enjoy some more yield plays"...If it weren't for the all of the capital gains taxes that would be incurred, maybe it wouldn't be a bad idea. Damn taxes!! :-/ Back in '03 I added quite a bit of margin due to my bullishness. In late '06 and now in early '07, I've unwound my leverage and virtually eliminated my margin. Consequently, I had big taxes in '06 and will have them again in '07 yuck! I'll be damned if I'm gonna sell my QCOM, EBAY, etc and face even heftier tax bills this year, so I'll sit tight on my core holdings. I really prefer not to over-trade, and have no problem just hanging on for a very long time.

Southern and MDU were the last two utilities to go, but I've gotten rid of them too, as I've "unwound" my margin. I'm sitting on a few very select techs, and big, safe blue chips like GE, WMT, JNJ, DE, BA, BUD, KO, and some financials like BAC.

I think that you may very well be spot-on, regarding the market trading sideways for a long time and folks forgetting about "real" gains! Valuations are indeed reasonable, interest rates historically low, and world economies in generally good shape. I've just wanted to reduce my overall risk profile and therefore have already sold much in the past 8 months and rather than sell anything else from my "core" holdings, I'm actually adding some select shorts as a further hedge and am hunkering down with the bluest of the blue, for the inevitable "correction". Of course my ANX holdings are one obvious and glaring exception to the phrase "Blue Chip", so I hope it pays off!! ;-P

If you like yields, you ought to consider ALD & HR, both long-term core holdings of mine that have done quite nicely. HR is my only remaining reit.

Best to you!
