I will foolishly reply seriously to your japery, then I am logging off for the night. The best thing about teaching this course is that you could get through the students' defenses and cynicism because the subject matter was something they cared passionately about. Once through those defenses I was able to help teach themselves how to use critical thinking, how to deconstruct meaning and messages hidden in popular culture, how to understand technology interacts with culture, to understand how race and gender operate in society, and similar issues. Needless to say, the students who thought it would be an easy credit where they could talk about their favorite guitar player were dismayed, but in general I think I was able to turn out students better equipped to understand their cultural surround and their place in it. That's it -- time for dinner. LC
