PARIS (Thomson Financial) - President Nicolas Sarkozy's conservative UMP party is poised to sweep French legislative elections on June 10 and 17 by gaining a substantial number of seats at the expense of the Socialists, according to the latest poll by Ifop.

The two-stage legislative vote takes place just over a month after Sarkozy won the presidency, beating Socialist candidate Segolene Royal.

The poll showed the UMP winning 420-460 seats of the 555 seats allocated for mainland France in the National Assembly, up from 359 at present, while the Socialists would drop to 80-120 seats from the current 149.

The centrist MoDem party formed by failed presidential candidate Francois Bayrou would get four seats or less as candidates who might have run under that banner have abandoned the party to support Sarkozy, according to Ifop.
