Abu Dhabi: His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai chaired a cabinet meeting on Sunday.

The Cabinet decided to introduce stricter measures and legal procedures against illegal labour residing and working in the UAE.

It has instructed the Ministry of Interior in coordination with the Ministry of Labour and other concerned ministries to take the necessary steps to implement the cabinet’s decision.

These procedures include imposing fines and imprisonment sentences against anyone who shields or employs a worker that is not sponsored by him, or allows illegal workers to reside in his premises, especially in farms belonging to Emiratis across the country.

A three-month grace period, which started yesterday, has been given for violators to adjust their conditions or leave the country without being questioned or fined.

The Cabinet urged all concerned to speed up the implementation of this order to preserve the national interest.

The Cabinet further instructed the Ministry of Labour to inform all private companies to start paying their employees’ salaries by bank transfer from January 1, 2008.

The Cabinet approved an agreement between the UAE and the Netherlands to prevent double taxing. It also reviewed a number of topics and took appropriate decisions regarding them.
