Besides, the real purpose of public schools is to "socialize" kids, crush the spirits of those that might rebel and drive them to drop out, and turn the sad remainder into drones fit to work in large corporations. Education is a distant secondary priority.

It's ridiculous even to consider spelling "education". Whatever spelling you need should be picked up as a side effect of reading. Just use your spell checker..

>Whoa! That really depends on the quality of the teacher doing the homeschooling. I have met homeschooled kids who are behind their public/private school peers.

Yeah, but it'd make sense that on average, if a kid has one-on-one attention all the time from parents that have the financial ability and the dedication to make it happen, he'll do pretty well, on average.

>Secondly, spelling is the kind of subject where a kid has to want to learn it......I was a good speller and in fact, I competed in that spelling bee and represented my junior high in the city wide bee. However, I liked to spell and would practice spelling even while watching tv. Without that personal motivation, I don't think you can be a good speller.

Not true. I never studied spelling (not even for spelling tests in school). I made the regional spelling be twice -- once in sixth grade, and once in tenth. When you've got it, you've got it :)

Then again, my mom's a reading specialist and she had me reading at the age of 2.
