I had never heard of Sleeping Bear Dunes Nat'l Lakeshore prior to planning this vacation. We had to ax going to Mount Rushmore due to time constraints. We decided on a trip through the Lower & Upper Peninsula of Michigan, then down thru Wisconsin (via Green Bay & Milwaukee), then 3 days in Chicago (other than my few trips through Chicago, it was all virgin territory for the wife & I).

The northern part of the Lower Peninsula is fantastic. The shorelines, Manistee Nat'l Forest & Sleeping Bear Dunes are simply incredible. And the Upper Peninsula is fantastic as well though it is fairly remote (fine with me). And the Pictured Rocks Nat'l Lakeshore is incredible (see the pics below).
