About 100ml of ethylene glycol is needed to kill adults. That's quite a lot. So people could brush their teeth with toothpaste with some in and they'd be fine. emedicine.com

Ethylene glycol could be a sweetener in toothpaste and the China makers perhaps figured people don't eat it so a sweet taste was okay. I have no idea why they put it in.

Methanol is far more toxic with 20ml being a possibly fatal dose. I have had methanol on my skin and lots of other stuff.

One can be unduly panicky about "chemicals" as well as unduly blase.
