How did your Dad's family learn to speak English? In school?
I know of no one who doesn't try to learn English when they get here. ESL classes are jammed with students and Literacy Volunteers of American has long waiting lists. My wife was a volunteer for a number of years. But mostly I think, parents learn it from their kids. An what is this nonsense of an official language, there's no doubt it is our official language.
And your point about catering to non or poor-English speaking people may cost money but I'll wager it makes more money than it costs. Business people recognize the value of speaking the language of potential customers.... Europeans have known it forever, it seems. As a young man, I used to think like you and thought that old country traditions and language should be left at the border....I have changed my mind and now think it only adds to the strength and charm of the country. I don't know where I'd be without ethnic restaurants...especially Italian.
Around here, I call Italian our native food.

Have you done a lot of foreign traveling?
