Why two parties ?

1) The country wasn't diverse when it started in late 1700s.

2) first pass the post (most votes wins even if a dozen candidates)
will tend towards two parties.

Proportional representation and run off elections until a candidate has a majority increase the viability of multiple parties.

3) Having two legislative houses produces even more pressure to move to the middle. That is by design to keep the US from splitting into factions.
