German Population Shrinks as Birth Rate Drops; Fewer Immigrants. Germany's population shrank in 2006 as the number of deaths outnumbered births and fewer people moved to Europe's largest economy.

The number of people in the country fell to 82.3 million, down 123,000 or 0.1 percent from the previous year, the Federal Statistics Office in Wiesbaden said in a faxed statement today.

Last year 149,000 more people died than were born, the statistics office said, adding that it registered 673,000 births, 1.9 percent fewer than in 2005. ``The number of births has declined since 1991,'' the statement said.

At the same time, the number of immigrants seeking their fortune in Germany is falling, the report said. Last year 23,000 more people moved to Germany than left, the statistics office said, without giving comparable figures for previous years.

According to the statement, fewer Germans got married last year, with 374,000 couples tying the knot, down from 388,000 in 2005. The number of registry office weddings has steadily declined since the early 90's, the statistics office said.

Former East Germany was hardest hit by the population drop with 0.8 percent fewer inhabitants in 2006. Bavaria, Berlin, Bremen and Hamburg all recorded an increase in the number of people living there, the statement said.
