ElM, I take your point about "natural size", but "return" isn't what things do. The cosmos is teleological and there's no going back in the arrow of time which runs forwards. While empires come and go, it's not really that they return to natural size so much as things change, move on, supersede.

The Gaia theory of Earth in some mythical happy balance is false. We are on a one way journey, out of balance and hoping for the best. We are running a planet-wide real-time experiment and there is no opting out.

I don't mean to be pedantic, but there's a fundamental issue there. The Greenhouse Effect doomsters for example have a believe that Gaia loves us and has a happy balance somewhere. Not so. Gaia has been on a suicide mission for a billion years. Life has been self-stripping from the biosphere/ecosphere and depositing itself in vast limestone, shale oil, heavy bituminous, gas, coal and oil deposits. There is less and less carbon in the biosphere available for life and the atmosphere is thin gruel indeed.

Eafth has been freezing and crystallizing as the various elements conglomerate together after once being a swirling mass of stardust and gaseous feedstock for life.

Foolishly, as is human, we are doing the exact opposite of what we need to do to keep warm [I should say talking about it rather than doing it - fortunately [in this instance] humans are self-serving hypocrites]. Cutting CO2 production is not a good idea. Ice age is now the natural state of Earth. Warm spells are the exception.
