The mineral -- sphalerite -- acted as a photocatalyst that worked with sunlight to foster the chemical reactions.

LOL. I think I still have my boyhood rock collection in a box somewhere, and there may well be chunk of galena therein. I sure did love those shiny rocks when I was a kid, and a few times toyed with the idea of becoming a geophysicist, but the lure first of nuclear physics and then the social sciences won out. LC
