we could still salvage at least a stalemate, if you will -- not a stalemate but at least stave off defeat.

So now we are losing soldiers and reputation and resources - not for a stalemate even - but to "stave off defeat". One has to wonder how long that will take? Doesn't that suggest this war will go on forever?
