My comment: Republicans in disarray.

McCain supporter switches to Thompson

WASHINGTON, June 8 (UPI) -- One of Sen. John McCain's major fundraisers in the 2000 presidential campaign reportedly has switched his allegiance to former Sen. Fred Thompson.

The Washington Post reported Friday John Dowd's change of heart is symbolic of the struggles McCain, R-Ariz., faces as he tries to raise the money necessary to win the Republican presidential nomination.

"I am very sorry to see what's happened to John," Dowd told the Post. "I don't think his campaign is being well run. It's been over-managed. He blew through $8.5 million. It's a difficult thing to leave a friend and go to another friend. But we lost the John McCain I knew."

McCain appeared to be a front-runner when the Republican race began. He now trails former New York Mayor Rudolph Giulianni in most polls, and the possible entry of Thompson, R-Tenn., in the race could damage his campaign even more.

Former Rep. Tom Loeffler, R-Texas, who is running McCain's fundraising, told the Post he doesn't think Thompson will cut into donations to McCain.

"I don't believe there will be any impact at all," Loeffler said. "We have a very good leadership system. Very good tracking system. Excellent people."
