You should be able to find some congressional records from 1871 at your university I would think. General Sherman led the congressional hearings.

I have searched and not found hearings conducted by Sherman. Even Forrest worshipers admit a massacre occurred at the fort:

And frankly, the more I read about Forrest the more I am not surprised that the South idolizes the man. He was an uneducated, violent, aggressive, uncouth man who traded slaves.

The problem for the South is what they look for in their heroes.
