Q: Dr. Friedman should the U.S.A. open its borders to all immigrants? What is your opinion on that?

A: Unfortunately no. You cannot simultaneously have free immigration and a welfare state.

all anyone need do is spend some time in s. ca to understand the impact of unfettered illegal immigration....too bad politicians are putting a higher value on the hispanic vote rather than the good of the nation as a whole....

hopefully fred t. is smart enough to campaign as the candidate unwilling to surrender the border

Friedman's last point is a good one that is relevant to the sub-debate about guest-worker programs, but the bill being debated in the Senate does not call for "open borders". Far from it, in fact. And to my knowledge, no one in that debate (or here) is now or has ever called for open borders.

Though I wouldn't put it past some to prop that up as a straw man.

Not you, of course.
