I know a guy who suffered a debilitating illness earlier this year. He developed a septic abscess on his spine, and was paralyzed. He was helicoptered to the nearest regional medical center where he underwent surgery, two weeks of intenstive care unit and two weeks of rehab, followed by outpaitient rehab.

He had no health insurance. I imagine his hospital bill is well north of $100,000.

He is unable to work.

He's now been turned down twice for social security disability.

The hospitals are after him for money, although he has applied for reduced fees from them.

One representative of the hospital told him, "you're the wrong color. If you were hispanic, we could help you, and you wouldn't owe us anything."

Amazing and outrageous.
