Oeconomicus, you make a lot of good points regarding this current immigration debate. However, I cannot buy into this point...

<< "You can't deport them if you can't find them. They certainly aren't going to come forward voluntarily and it is highly doubtful that more than a few xenophobic extremists would be pleased with the massive resources and brutal tactics it would take to remove them by force, never mind the economic fallout." >>

A significant portion of those opposed to the current immigration bill do want something done about the millions & millions of illegal aliens currently in the US. I am certain that almost all of them are not "xenophobic extremists", yet they want as many of those illegals deported by simply having law enforcement rigorously enforcing existing laws while simultaneously showing due care for the civil rights of all legal residents. And if current laws are found to be insufficient to adequately address the problem, then pass new ones that will be properly enforced so that over time a vast majority of the illegal aliens are sent packing.

There are numerous ways that a vast majority of illegal aliens can be found without the slightest need for "massive resources and brutal tactics". Law enforcement already knows where to find them in large numbers. Hell, even most journalists know where to go to get film of them & to interview them any time they want for their news stories on the issue. We simply aren't rigorously enforcing the current laws on the books. And we certainly aren't making it clear to the illegals that we are coming after them & that repeat offenders will face increasingly harsher consequences. If anything we have made it clear to them to openly & flagrantly violate our laws because there are almost no consequences.

All we need to do is flip from the ridiculously lax enforcement to rigorous, build a wall, step up boarder enforcement & seriously crack down on those who aid in transporting illegals as well as repeat offenders. Once it's clear that the US is dead serious about halting illegal aliens within our boarders & the consequences for violating those laws are not worth the risk the problem will take care of itself rather quickly.
