I'm not gone yet, but identified somewhat with your "let it fly" approach.

I'm uncomfortable completely winging it in front of a crowd. My normal routine is to write extensive notes, review them a couple of times, and then virtually ignore them during a talk. It's as if the words just come to me at the right moments, although I think it's more accurate that I've subconsciously almost memorized what I want to say. It's almost surreal at times. By the end, though, the whole experience is quite a shot in the arm.

I'm guessing that you, on the other hand, have the ability to get up and speak extemporaneously rather well without appearing unprepared. That strikes me as a unique talent. I'm not as comfortable trying to pull that off (though I guess trials have a certain amount of that element), and have a fear of being unprepared that overrides my confidence to let it rip on the spur of the moment.

Good luck with yours.
