Then why did the US free Kuwait and recondition all the wells there that Saddam blew up? That allowed Kuwait to get back in the oil market.

Why do Democrats oppose US drilling offshore the west and east coasts and in ANWR - are they conspiring to keep oil prices high?

--------------------------------

Iran ..... a source for cheap oil was lost. Iran was NOT a source of cheap oil under the Shah. Iran under the Shah was a price hawk pushing for higher prices. The overthrow of the Shah saw Iran's oil production go way down - it has never gotten back to the levels of the Shah's days. The sudden cut in Iran's production during the Iranian revolution produced the spurt in prices in about 1980.

Saudi Arabia otoh has historically been moderate on prices. During the mid '80's SA produced full out to keep prices low as a way of waging economic war on the USSR - a policy negotiated by the Reagan admininstration.

it generally takes 10 years or so for investment to become profitable.

Actually thats pretty accurate. Big developments generally take a minimum of 7 years - for the best companies.
