Agco to import low-cost tractors for US farmers
By Doug Cameron in Chicago
Sunday Aug 19 2007 17:40

Agco, the farm equipment maker, plans to start importing low-cost tractors from India to the US later this year to meet surging demand from so-called "rural lifestyle" farmers.

The US group will import Massey Ferguson-brand tractors, built in a joint venture with Tafe in Chennai, to compete with such rivals in the small tractor market as Deere and CNH (NYSE:CNH) . Mahindra & Mahindra, the Indian tractor maker, already exports some models to the US.

The move mirrors efforts by some carmakers to import from low-cost producers such as China to the US, although the market for small tractors is being driven by more affluent buyers.

Deere to Expand Capacity for Large Horsepower Tractors
Thursday February 28, 8:30 am ET

MOLINE, Ill., Feb. 28 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Deere & Company said today it will invest an additional $90 million in its Waterloo, Iowa, facilities with plans to expand manufacturing capacity for large, high-horsepower tractors. Deere said the investment will help the company meet continued worldwide market demand for the equipment.

"John Deere has experienced strong global customer demand for tractors made in Waterloo that expertly integrate complex electronic and mechanical systems to provide powerful and versatile machines," said David Everitt, President, Agricultural Division -- North America, Australia and Asia and Global Tractor Sourcing.

"John Deere customers around the world are reinvesting in farm machinery as they sell commodities at higher prices due to increasing demands for food, especially meat, and increasing global use of bio-fuels."

Tractors built in Waterloo are exported to more than 130 countries and are highly popular with the most productive producers in North America.

Although the investment will not add floor space to current Deere facilities, it will increase the company's Waterloo capacity to build large, high-horsepower tractors by about 25 percent. The improvements will be substantially completed by early 2010, the company said. The investment will include additional machine tooling, new manufacturing technology, and improved work processes as well as replacement of the current paint system.

The project announced today follows a multi-year investment by Deere of more than $140 million to modernize and improve efficiencies at its manufacturing facilities in Waterloo, which includes John Deere's largest tractor factory in the world.

John Deere (Deere & Company - NYSE: DE) is the world's leading provider of advanced products and services for agriculture and forestry and a major provider of advanced products and services for construction, lawn and turf care, landscaping and irrigation. Deere Enters Joint Venture, Expands Construction Equipment Presence in China
Friday February 29, 8:30 am ET

MOLINE, Ill., Feb. 29 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Deere & Company today announced it will expand its presence in the world's largest and fastest growing market for construction equipment by entering into a joint venture in China.

Deere said it has signed a definitive agreement to own 50 percent of Xuzhou Xuwa Excavator Machinery Co., Ltd. (XCG) -- a subsidiary of Xuzhou Bohui Science and Technology Development CO. Ltd. (Bohui). The companies are seeking review of the transaction by government approval authorities in China.

"Today's action provides Deere with a foundation in this important and rapidly expanding marketplace with an opportunity to leverage the expertise of XCG in China," said Samuel R. Allen, president, Worldwide Construction and Forestry Division. "XCG is a leader in providing quality machines that perform to high standards for customers, which is a key to enhancing our construction equipment business in this growing market."

XCG was viewed as a viable partner for the Chinese market because of its strong domestic position as a leading Chinese manufacturer of construction equipment with a broad excavator product line of 14 models. Currently XCG is the third largest domestic excavator manufacturer in China with dealers covering all but two provinces of the Chinese market.

"Excavators are a vital segment of the construction equipment market," Allen said. "XCG is well positioned to provide Deere recognition as a key provider of construction equipment in China."

While Deere has a long-term presence in the manufacturing of agricultural equipment in China, this is the company's first manufacturing operation in construction equipment in the country. Deere's construction and forestry division is the world's leading producer of equipment for forestry and a leading provider of a broad range of construction equipment in North America.

Deere also has an important long-standing business relationship with Hitachi Construction Machinery Co., Ltd. a leading global manufacturer of excavators. The two companies manage a joint venture in Kernersville, N.C. producing equipment for the Americas supporting their joint marketing arrangement. This latest transaction will have no effect on the current relationship with Hitachi in the Americas. Deere said it remains committed to this relationship and continues to value its partnership with Hitachi.

Financial terms of the Deere-XCG transaction were not announced.
